Some people prefer foam based mattresses whereas other prefer sprung based. Therefore we need a holistic approach to address this question adequately.
Foam based mattresses
The performance and durability of these mattresses depend on the thickness and density of the foams used.
For example, a memory foam mattress is made using two different foams – memory foam (top layer) and base foam (bottom layer). You should ask the seller the thickness and density of the memory foam (comfort core of your mattress) as it influences both the price and the quality of your mattress. A good quality memory foam has a density more than 39 kg/m3 as it provides better support and pressure relief. Thus higher the density, better the support and pressure relief. Furthermore, the thickness of memory foam is also important. A 20 cm (8”) mattress could contain 2 to 3 cm (1”) memory foam only with the rest being a regular base foam.
Sprung based mattresses
The performance and durability of these mattresses depend on the comfort core and thickness of wire used in open coil or inner sprung.
The comfort core may include either memory foam, gel foam, latex foam, natural or synthetic fillings. The foams (natural or synthetic) as explained above are good at support and pressure relief. Natural or synthetic fillings, though good at providing comfort and sumptuous feel and offering pressure relief, are not as excellent as the foams in pressure relief performance.
On prima facie, foam based mattresses perform better and long last because they provide a more reliable and resilient support than the sprung based mattresses, however, as explained above their performance depends on the quality of the foams used.
Having said the above, it does not mean that sprung based mattresses do not perform as good as foam mattresses. Sprung based mattresses do not provide an adequate support to relieve all the pressure points unless decked with high quality memory foam or other pressure relieving foams. Without a quality comfort core, sprung based mattresses may cause you a muscular and skeletal pain over time with loss of your night’s sleep.
